Helenes Summer Brunch Tour

Summer travels mean summer rendezvous! And the best way to catch up is over pancakes and fresh OJ.

My journey begins at the end of May in my home for the summer, Los Angeles. Kylie, one of the most brunch-loving Helenes I know, joined me at Blu Jam Café on Melrose. We talked about the past semester, and Kylie was getting ready to spend her summer working at The Painted Turtle, a summer camp for children with disabilities.

In June I decided to take a spontaneous trip to Seattle. Once I got there, I called upon those I knew best: Helenes! After a bit of planning, I met Becky, Allison, and Courtney at Portage Bay Café, just a short walk from the Udub frat house (!) I was staying at. We talked about our summers: Becky was working at Microsoft, Allison at Costco, and Courtney at a retail store. They gave me tips on where to go in Seattle, and the next day I took a hike to one of the most beautiful sites I’d ever seen, all thanks to them!

In July my family took a short trip to the Bay Area to visit my grandpa. While I was there, I took the opportunity to visit my beautiful LITTLE *heart eye emoji*, Raina, a Palo Alto native. She picked me up, and we headed to Crepevine, a super cute creperie in Burlingame. She talked about her time working for a physical therapist this summer. Afterwards we walked around different shops and chatted about how excited we were for this semester.

My brunch tour ends where it started, this time with the beautiful Rachel Mathieu at Faith and Flower in Downtown LA. I, who had just rolled out of bed, felt a little out of place in this super trendy restaurant and with Rachel, a costume designer who is always fabulous. She told me about her time working 2 internships and a job at Anthropologie in Santa Monica. At this point, summer was coming to a close, and we had a really great conversation about how to make the most of the last weeks.

In the words of my idol, Leslie Knope, “We need to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles work. Or waffles, friends, work. Doesn’t matter, but work is third.” This summer I took that to heart. Helenes love and lots of yummy breakfast food were the highlights of my summer 2016.
