Volleyballin’

“U… S… See Ya!”

If you have no idea what that means, then you have probably never been to a USC Volleyball game. I myself hadn’t been to one until a few weeks ago when Helenes went to the first Women’s Volleyball Game of the semester and cheered on our Women of Troy. I sat in the stands cheering, at some of the wrong moments but most of the right ones, and anxiously clutching the girls on either side of me during every intense play. Watching those girls battle it out on the court, I was stunned and overcome with a unique sense of excitement that I haven’t felt before.

This year, the Helenes decided that we wanted to adopt a sports team, and we chose women’s volleyball. I’ve been to several of their games now, even though before this year, my senior year at SC, I’d never been to a sporting event outside of football. I had no idea what I was missing until I started going to these games. First of all, they’re fun. It’s a fast paced sport so the action goes quickly and you have to keep watching to know exactly what’s going on. It’s exhilarating and I am so in awe of all of the female athletes for not only playing well, but managing to look incredibly graceful while doing so.

Secondly, it’s exciting to get to serve my school in this way. As Helenes, we have the three pillars of Service, Sisterhood, and Spirit. In past, I’ve equated Spirit with just a general love of USC and enthusiasm at the football games. But in watching these Women of Troy, I’ve gained a completely new sense of Spirit. I love going to their games and cheering them on. I love standing with my fellow Helenes and cheering for these female athletes who are so often overlooked. I love learning about a new sport. I hope that for all of the enjoyment I have gained from going to these games that the athletes have gotten something from me as well. While football is still incredibly fun and a great, spirited event, I am realizing that there are many other places to be spirited while at USC. I intend to spend the rest of my last year here being as spirited in as many different places as I possibly can, starting at the very next volleyball game.

Fight on!
